Today, I finished what I was so engrossed in and when I was over and done with it, the first thing I did was to laugh, and I couldnt stop =)

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky – I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me – I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

Alone Time

I am beginning to feel like I am getting a little compulsive with the blogging. This definitely feels a little like making up for lost time.

Well. It was a lucky break that I didn't need to work over the weekend (actually this is not entirely true... I'm just leaving some work due tom morning for later... oh well)

BF got summoned home for dinner, which leaves me with some much needed alone-with-myself time. Someone once told me that guys are usually the ones who need time alone. Even when gals wanna spend time away from their guys, they wanna spend it with other ppl - other girls, that is. And that GFs only go off to do their own thing when he needs some alone-time.

I don't agree. It doesn't apply to me, at least not all the time. Maybe it is the manner in which I am used to living my life - doing my own thing, hanging out with my friends, getting caught up in my own world reading my favourite books and comics (I am really looking forward to the next Harry Potter book coming out, btw... just a few days more.... woohoo!!!! hahah... but that is so beside the point).

Spending too much time with one person (I am thinking of the day-in, day-out kind)- even if it is the person you love, can be suffocating. It can make you lose sight of yourself, because you are always trying to make way for 2 people in your life. You may not want to do the same things, or not the same things at the same time, so you compromise. You don't realize it until you get a chance to step back and think. And that is the scary part.

Which is why I need my alone time. Which is why I need to meet up with my friends to remind myself that I still have a life as an independent, attractive individual in my own right.
Which is why I should be working it into my schedule.

I wonder if he feels the same way.

My Ten Items (finally)

Here's the list of 10 things that make me smile:

(1) Using my Bodyshop papaya shower gel (oh... I love those luxurious baths... used to have them all the time esp during exam times when I am in dire need of cheering up :P)

(2) Getting a card/letter written from the heart

(3) Remembering the times when Ed was still zhui1-ing me in JC (including reading the stuff he wrote and looking at the stuff he gave me :P)

(4) Walking home in the sunset, when the entire sky above and beyond is dyed in yellow and orange hues

(5) Drinking a nice glass of Snowball

(6) Lazing around on a Sunday afternoon with a good book/comic and coffee

(7) When friends surprise you with little things to show that they care

(8) Attacking bf's nipples when he is not looking (MWHAHAHAHAHAH... it always gives me a perverse sense of gratification to see him hide and squirm with a pout on his face... hee hee)

(9) Dancing (boy, this one gets me REALLY high - with no alcohol involved!)

(10) knowing that I have a bunch of friends to rely on nomatter what happens....

(10)(a) The happy hormones swimming in my body after a run

(10)(b) Feeling like I have all the time in the world

(10)(c) Knowing that a whole bunch of heads are turning to look when I walk into a joint with my 5 other fabulous friends (of course, I dun ACTUALLY smile. I just want to, badly. These are times that require extreme self-control, composure and nonchalence!! Think COOL my friends!!!!)



ok.... I have cheated enough with my er-hem, 10 things.... will put up another bunch of stuff when I think of more!!! :P

Everything changes

"Everything changes but you.... We're a thousand miles apart but you know I love you .." was one cheesy song lyric that came to mind after reading your entry fishy. And yet I have to agree with you - the only constant might well be change.

While there have been many changes in the environment, in my thinking, beliefs and attitudes, I'm thankful that the important things in my life have not changed. I'm thankful for my family's love, for my friendships and for my love for life.

Call me a romantic irony. As much as I am into romance, I am not quite convinced that there are many cases of happily ever after. Wise move to marry a down-to-earth guy instead of that love-at-first-sight crush to secure an everlasting fidelity? I'm not so sure. After all many people change after they get richer or more powerful. And I'm not sure if the lack of lust or fire in the marriage will keep the marriage alive for very long either.

Marry the MR Perfect who sweeps you off your feet and it could well be that his love for you changes faster than you can change your clothes.

Being a person with great expectations for almost everything, I find it impossible to simply settle for living in the present, I think I prefer living the present with the future in sight. And I do hope there's one more constant in my life when I get married.

A quote I like a lot about love and marriage.

" It never changes, when the groom lifts the veil, when the bride accepts the ring, the possiblities you see in their eyes, it's the same around the world. They truly believe their love and their marriage is going to break all the records." - 5 people you meet in heaven.

Today I Marry My Friend....

Hahaha... somehow I'm not surprised to find out that I'm a minority when it comes to choosing btw marrying a friend, or marrying because of love at first sight. We are a free-spirited, passionate bunch aren't we, after all?

What can I say? I agree with fishy ---- (to take her words OUT of context ...) "Marriage is sacred", she says, with that cheeky, so-full-of-herself-that-she's-gonna-overflow look on her face. hahaha :)

yeah...I'm traditional in that way, and I wanna get it right the first time round. I don't belive in finding out about the person AFTER marriage, neither do I believe in living for the moment to regret for the rest of my life if my first gut feel was wrong.

People are complex creatures. And boy, people can change. People can get bored, and people may act up under pressure. The person you knew and fell in love with may not be the person who can stay by you for the rest of your life.

Cynicism aside, I do harbour hopes for a once in a lifetime, passionate, and firey romance ala Meteor Garden, or Mr. and Mrs Smith (allow me to point you to the correct parts of the movie - they are the portions shot in Cuba and right at the END.......ahhahahahahahahah). BUT, if something good comes along.... why not grab it with both arms???

After all, love need not come to us in exactly the way we want it to. Before I end this post, I would just like to put down for the record (to the best of my memory) something really sweet that a groom said to his bride at their wedding (this is from a poem by an Irish poet):

cherish, and love...


I love my posse too!

What? We've only just become your soulmates? Tsk Tsk =p

But yeah, I guess it makes everything in life more bearable to know that you have a group of soulmates whom you can trust and count on to grow old together.

They are there to listen, to empathise and to lend a shoulder. Never to judge, yet ever-ready to give that lift, they are indeed heaven's precious gift to us. It also helps that we are united not only by our common love for life and also our differences in personalities and thinkings that made us totally unique and interesting (I hope) individuals.

Fishy's entry has helped made some things clearer for me. It have been subconscious but now it's clear to me that my bar was set since JC. There were times of bewilderedness when I felt that no one understood and I was all alone and there were also times when I wanted to do so many things but there doesn't seem to be anyone who was interested in doing the same things. Though it was not a problem adapting to the new environment cox I was still fortunate to be in the company of many good people, it was not easy making soulmatey friends as well cox the benchmark was already set that high.

Perhaps the reason why some people find it hard to find that ideal boyfren or husband is because they have been blessed with many good female soulmates. As a result, the bar is set so high that most guys can seldom qualify. Then again, it cannot be helped if we are funny and share lots of chemistry; we like guys; we like to dress up; we like to party; we like romance and adventures; we like to dream; and we like to engage in conversations ranging from the superficial to the profound.

how fragile life is

yesterday, I learnt how fragile life is. Even for us, in the prime of our life, we live moment from moment. Every breathe that we take is a blessing in itself, a gift from God.

Just want to tell all to treasure everything that we have and those around us.

Learn to forgive and to ask for forgiveness.
Learn to love wholeheartedly.
Learn to live for the moment.
Learn to be happy and contented yet not forgetting to dream. Learn to appreciate the people around u.
Learn to love and be loved.
Learn not to have expectations and live freely without demandig freedom.

this is for a dear friend of mine...

Today, someone came into my mind...a dear friend, someone who has always been there for me no matter through ups and downs... someone I think has the biggest heart and unlimited kindness even though this person always felt that he is not as good as I make him out to be.

With this person, I never felt judged cos he accepts me for whoever I am or become ; whether I am being silly or in my philosophical mood talking about politically incorrect ideas: 'murder is not bad' (lets not go too deep into this =) ) I can say anything, everything - be anything, everything...

Platonic friendship like this is something I really treasure...

So this is just a blog dedicate to him and his generousity and his big heart... =)

7. yes watching Giselle dance puts a big smile on my face as well...cos she is so totally enjoying herself and being her great quirky self...(btw i think her dance moves are totally groovy)

a little story from this book i am reading

There is this strange story from this book that I am reading now so I decided to blog it cos it amuses me so much and also it kinda inspired my previous post...

'According to [Plato], at the beginning of creation, men and women were not as they are now; there was just one being, who was rather short, with a body and a neck, but his head had two faces, looking at different directions, It was as if two creatures had been glued back to back, with two sets of sex organs, four legs and four arms.

The Greek gods, however, were jealous, because this creature with four arms could work harder, with its two faces, it was always vigilant and could not be taken by surpirse; and its four legs mant that it could stand or walk for long periods at a time without tiring. Even more dangerous was the fact that the creature had two different sets of sex organs and so needed no one else in order to continue reproducing.

Zeus, the supreme lord of Olympus, said:" I have a plan to make these mortals lose some of their strength."

And he cut the creature in two with a lightning bolt, thus creating man and woman. This greatly increased the population of the world, and, at the same time, disoriented and weakened its inhabitants, because now they had to search for their lost half and embrace it and in that embrace, regain their former strength, their ability to avoid betrayal and stamina to walk for long periods of time and to withstand hard work. That embrace in which the two bodies re-fuse to become one again is what we call sex.'

tomorrow...tomorrow...time ticks away

I once ordered a whole batch of books, for free because I could get another free book on Greek mythology ( the whole 'free' thing is quite complicated and there is a long story behind it - anyway I got a free atlas, history of the world book, Oxford Dictionary and of course my book of Greek myths) and two or three years down the road, I have not even so much as touched those books... all because ' i was too busy'

made me think long and hard on this commonly heard excuse of ' I am too busy right now not to do this... that...whatever it is' and I finally concluded that we are never just too busy to do anything and if we have really wanted to do it, we would have.

And sometimes, we become just too 'busy' for the people in our life - too busy to hold the hands of the one we love; to tell our moms that they are the greatest in the world; to sit down for dinner with our family; to talk philosophy with our dad; to kiss our dogs/cats (okay I cant imagine kissing yoda...can u do that damselfish?) and let them lick our hands; too busy to dream; too busy to go for walks by the beach or stay up to watch the sunrise...

Before one more year passes, I am gonna lay my hands ... and eyes on that book... =p

12. Using the computer with all lights off (exactly what I am doing now...sigh....ask me why next time)

as we have spoke in the cafe yesterday, we thought to come up with a list of ten things that makes us smile/happy...I was about to write something last night but horrors! I had a huge huge writer's block.

I don't know if it is the hot and humid weather here or the books I have been reading...

But here goes

Things that make me smile:

1. Looking out at a sky full of twinkling stars when all around is slient

2. Hugs from people who care

3. Someone playing my favourite song on the guitar

4. Lying down on soft green grass on a summer day

5. Knowing that you have made someone else happy

6. Doing crazy things like rolling on the grass, walking in the rain without caring if ' adults dun do things like that'

7. Seeing others do these crazy things

8. Remembering the sweet stuff that Terry has done for me

9. Walking barefoot

10. Suddenly keeping quiet and hearing the chirping of birds in the distant (usually when u are out in the nature, this happens)

The morning after

1. How come I violate my principle of not getting drunk? Who was i with? No colleagues I hope. Ah hah..the girls....thank goodness Did I thank the girls for sending me home? *opps...think i didn't*
2. Did I change ? *oh thank goodness I did*
3. Did I remove my make-up??? *till now I'm not too sure*
4. What time is it? Let it not be noon, let it not be noon....the weekend's too short to sleep it away. *thank goodness it's 830am, freak, what's wrong with me??*

self esteem

Today I learn about service and challenges. One of the principles is to boost customer's self esteem, for instance by paying sincere compliments and making them feel good about themselves.

Perhaps the lesson has rubbed off so well, I found myself being very free with my compliments after work. It's not like it's a radical change of personality cox I am already an extrovert at heart. And I am not the type to pay compliments if they are not from the bottom of my heart. I guess the main difference is that today I found myself more unreserved with my compliments. And it was a totally enjoyable experience.

"Nice hair you've got there" , " your service is great", "how did you do your hair? looks so styled" are some of my exchange with different salespersons at PS. The overall experience was fantastic for I felt great seeing and knowing that they were very pleased as well. More importantly, I know these are compliments from the heart. It might be retail therapy that had put me in a good temper as well. Whatever it is, all I wanna share is that sincere compliments are wonderful day-makers.

Be generous, be spontaneous, be free with them ... and importantly, be sincere. Enjoy!

i once found love across a room

Chun's post brought back some nice memories...because once i did - fell in love across a room... to be exact, love found me from across the room.

I believe in love at first sight because it happened to me before. A simple conversation at the right moment in time brought two people together on their first days in a foreign country. Because at that time they were meant to be:

" Hello. My name is XX. How about u?"

Happiness can be a phone call away (crappy title)

Just received a phone call from his guy in Zurich. He's was actually the HR Director who recruited me ... and have i ever told you that he was the cutest guy i've met in UBS?! All i could remember after my first interview with him was, he's got nice blue eyes...aniway, he's got a cute name too..THIS , yes and that's his name :)

So, i just told him that i'll be going to Zurich soon and then he suggested that we can go out for drinks and catch up after work.

That's the little thing that brightened my day before Ms Peahen spoils it again. aniway, heck, it's 6 and i'm going home.

forgetting

Perhaps it was not sheer forgetfulness that propelled many in history to repeat history. I think some might have recalled history but actively choose to ignore it, either cox they are blinded by temptations, ambitions or hatred, or feel that lightning seldom strike twice.

To a certain extent, I think big or bad events are seldom forgotten. Forgetting only appears to have taken place when there is a conscious attempt to put them away. To quote the tsunami disaster for again, I think few survivors would ever really forget the trauma of losing their loved ones and what they have built up. But I believe it was due to their sheer will and strength that allowed them to make a conscious effort to put the past aside, and work towards rebuilding their lives. Note I use the word "aside" instead of "behind" cox I believe these things never get forgetten. At least not in their lifetime. Perhaps burying the memories somewhere makes them fainter but they are always there. Perhaps future governments might appear to have forgotten (for instance, they do nothing about putting in measures to mitigate impact of such events) but that might be political myopia rather than amnesia.

Forgetting bad things can be a function of strength and also a function of denial. Whichever it is, it is mostly a choice.

On the other hand, true forgetfulness is a condition in which we try but fail to recollect. Hence, to me, this lack of choice can only be a bane.

Auschwitz.

Before I begin on what's my mind on this late summer night after a good drink or two (or three) of beer, I will just like to say hi to Kenneth and for sharing his views. I will like to read through it once again when I am more sober. =)

Just before I go to bed, I would just like to share that tomorrow I will go to Auschwitz. Unlike many who put it on their to see list when they visit Poland, I hesitate much about going there cos I was afraid of what it will make me feel...of facing the sheer display of humanity's capability of inflicting fear, pain and hurt on people that are about the same as them if not for the society's tendency to put us all into neat little boxes called race, religion etc.

Someone once told me that there is simply too much done and said about the pain of the Jewish people. In a sense that is right because there is so much more sadness in the world that many of us in developed countries do not see unless the media decides to tell that story to us and the story of the Jewish people is just one of these terrible stories. Thus, in our ability to feel greatly for the Jews terrible fate; we might not feel so much or even know about the sufferings of many others in the world ( in a strange sense, what i mean is that these Jewish stories take up too much space in history- i know this is so controversial and politically incorrect but trying to be politically correct all the time will only end one up living a life of what others want to hear and see of us) Our perceptions are shaped much by what the media has to say. What will make us feel sad, what matters, what is in fashion etc...

But in other sense, I do not think it is right to say that. Cos these people have seriously suffered and lessons of their pain will hopefully help the world in the future learn to do or not to do something. But of course the most important lessons are often forgotten.

The human mind is sometimes so forgetful... we forget easily about history and thus end up stumbling on the same rocks over and over again. But because we are forgetful, we as a race can survive and move on. What strikes me most after the tsunami incident was that in a while's time, people in our world will soon relegate that disaster to the back of their lives; even those who have just manage to escape the calamity- those who will survive are those who can forget and move on...

in a sense forgetfulness is both a bane and blessing to the human condition...

Smile

As with every day, I try to find something to smile at. Today, I smiled when I know my friends are there to lend a helping hand when I needed it. And on my way home, I smiled when I caught the sweet scent of flowers placed at the entrance of a newly opened shop.

Yesh, despite the lack of creative juices for my work these few days, I manage to find something to smile about =)

My colleague told me " you have a boyfriend? Good...good that you have. Cox I don't think I would ever get married if I wasn't attached when I started working here. " Kind and sincere advice. Something to smile about.

I can find a million things to frown upon and to whine about. But at the end of the day, these negative forces just makes your day unbearable. I've met people, brilliant and all, but yet I shunned their company as far as possible. Why? Simply cox they reeked too much of cynism and negativity. These things spread like flu viruses and IMHO, should be avoided as much as possible.

Maybe sometimes life ain't so hard. It's only as hard as you it to be.

Learning...

its been a long time since I learnt about things that matter to me as a person... For the longest time in my fourth year, I was caught up with getting the best grades...

I think it was the last strive to make something out of my university life in the way that Singaporeans only know how to - to be the best measuring only by the insitutional recognition that we get...in other words, how many As we have. So there I was the master of differentiation; of telling u what is the most optimal choice in a question that was hardly reflective of reality. Yet I know nothing about the philospohical strands of economic thought and I have never read the original text of Adam Smith nor Karl Marx (okay I did try and read one of the books by Karl Marx but was too busy with work..excuses, excuses).

I am not saying that all these technical knowledge are not important but the true nature of learning was simply lost on me while I pursued that all important Dean's List and As... I was becoming the very people that I did not want to be like! Far away in the deep recesses of my memory, I recalled the vague image of a girl who had wanted to take certain courses just because it interests her and the girl who was extremely irked by those who said they did this course and that course because it was easy to score.

Thus, I have learnt about theatre, enjoyed my french lessons, discussed about various cultures in anthropology classes, watched plenty of old classics in film classes and contemplate about God in Theology classes. And then suddenly fourth year came and I was counting the CAP points needed to make it to the Dean's List again.
Sure in the end, I got the degree I wanted but this senseless fight have left me a very empty person...but I also could understand this had to be so...I do not regret that I went through that but am glad that I knew that something was wrong...

I am almost 23 years and there is so much about the world that I do not know... it is not a regret but a desire to do something about it.

Workplace makes you a hypocrite?

I have got a training at 10.15, just as I'm about to go, my colleague just informed me that she's going for the training so is my boss, so i have to stay behind.

Ok, for the benefit of my clients, i have to stay. Then she came back, saying that the training was good, i should go. I answered," I actually signed up for the session just now, but never mind, I'll go for the session in the afternoon" . And I gave her the sweetest smile ever.
What F***, y should i always be the one covering u?!?


Sometimes, I get quite pissed off with people who throw their weight around. They think that they are more experienced than you then they'll expect you to listen and accommodate to them. I hate the workplace! Even if I very very angry, I can't flare up.... oh well, might as well master the skill of "poker face" ... think I’m getting better at it.

So much to start a Monday, yuckS!!

sunny afternoon, great book and an even upper body tan

I couldn´t put down this book that I am reading during my trip... its the latest by Paulo Coelho and it is called ` The Zahir´. As any Paulo Coelho book goes it has much little wisdoms about life.

Today, I visited the Lake District of Salzkammergut. I was at St. Gilgen where Mozart´s mother was born. Seriously this place seems to be making too much money from using Mozart´s name...=p Quite beautiful and quaint (the lake and village that is not his mother hee).

Making my way back to Krakow again and to reach there in the wee hours of 0533H...whew it is going to be a long train ride back...thankfully my book will keep me pretty much occupied.

ice caves...brrr

Today I made a trip to the ice caves...real fasinating things they were... but i was also very tired from all the climbing and walking and freezing... i took many photos to prove how cold it was and also many high paranomic shots to prove how much i have walked...haha

The scenery was really beautiful and a good geography lesson as well.- valley, meandering rivers etc etc... I always had a strong impression of physical geography from secondary school as I loved making those figures and pictures of how volcanoes are formed etc.

General Observations

Wonder if anyone has felt like a second class friend before?
Case in point: Like when a friend obviously prioritizes her boyfriend over you (I mean of course, BF is very important but there is no need to be obvious about it), and shows it.

This afternoon I called a friend out for a movie. We have just agreed on a time and venue when she dropped me a message to say that her boyfriend had a change of plans and she was now going to meet him instead.

A seemingly small issue I guess, but this seems to be the general attitude and I am beginning to get sick of it. When we were studying in school, whether we can go for dinner depends on whether BF wants to have dinner together, if BF wants to have dinner together then she will be meeting BF for dinner instead. Then she proceeds to wait for BF to call her.

I feel shitty that I cannot be more understanding about her priorities (after all, everyone is entitled to handle things differently, incluing friends), but I feel that people who do not value your friendship do not deserve your friendship as much. Maybe I am just being unreasonable and demanding. Maybe when Ed comes back I will again begin to see how important it is to spend time with your BF, or maybe I should simply be more broad minded...

Oh well.

thoughts by the Salzach river

Sometimes life can be lived simply without always having to do important things and being an important person. TodayI sat by the banks of the Salzach River and allow the beauty of Salzburg capture me and the gently flowing river quench my thirsty soul.

Being by myself in a beautiful place always gives me inspiration. Inspiration not of artistic greatness but that inspiration for life, beauty, love and words to make myself understood. A simple and innocent sort of inspiration that exists in everyone who takes a moment and really see and appreciate the wholeness of life and him or herself, thinking not of him or herself but just being.

Today as I walked by the bridge, there was a Hispanic man playing the harp. What wonderful things this man can do - working wonders with his fingers that glide so gracefully across the strings. Wonder beacause of what his music brought to the people around him. A sort of music that made them glad and their day a better one. I smile and were joyful...

nice dinner, good conversation + next stop vienna

i am gonna catch a train at 0700H and now it is 0027H and I really should catch some sleep. There is something that I really wanted to say so I think I will forego a few minutes of my sleep to say whatever I was thinking of blogging. Writing has been therapeutic and being able to share my thoughs and feelings with people who care is a blessing.

I was having a nice dinner , with live classical music , great company and I had a strange moment. Suddenly everything became so clear to me... the feeling was bitter sweet but nevertheless a feeling of clarity and a sense of peace... I understood why things turn out this way and I understood how some things could have been handled properly and I understood my weakness for not being expressing myself well in words that may have caused much misunderstanding...and I understood him a lot more ...amazingly it all dawn onto me at that moment...

I am moving on ,I can feel it...sad to leave this romance behind but still wanting to move on, knowing what has been done wrongly and knowing that in the future, I will do it better and the love that I will be able to experience then would be much more beautiful. As all my dear friends will know and have seen and probably felt, that I have never been so madly in love with someone.

Beautiful memories are mine for keeps, while it brings a smile to my heart, it also pierces deep as well...

to my dearest friends...

Dear friends,

I appreciate so much all your concern for me. Sometimes things change and there is nothing you can do about it except to move on or allow life to mow you over.

Ever had the feeling you wanted to turn back time because there is a certain point in life where a seemingly small thing happened and you end up turning up another lane you did not want to land up at. Sometimes, we are at cross junctions of our life and then you really have to stop and think where you would like to turn at that point. It is moment like this, you seemingly have more choices to decide how your life might head, although, the bustling traffic at the junction would have make it more terrifying but having to chose is clear and consequences more easily imagined. But after you have crossed that road, life becomes a one way street and there is only one way you can go: forward. But of course there are times when paths that separated at the junction or never met before the junction, would cross for the first time or maybe once again. But the key is to move forward and to understand how wrong turns were made and how to avoid making them.

I am a lousy map reader...I walk and may end up where I might not intend to in the first place. In this way, life have thrown up little surprises for me, some ended up shaping my life and some simply remained as little things that happened in my life. But due to this, I have also made mistakes and taken a wrong direction something that I might not have foresee ... but today the sun shines again, mistakes made must be learnt since time cannot be turned back... I will only become stronger and know more about how to do something better the next time round...

In our world of evolution and the linear irreversibility of history and time, change is a big part of our life. There are some human beings who can deal with changes very well, some who embrace changes for all the enrichment it brings to their soul and experience and there are some who wants to be the same as much as possible. There is no saying what is right or wrong though as young people we are tending to not want to stay the same but to experience as much as the world will offer us. I think what is important not only in this issue is that there has to be moderation. One seeks changes but there must be consistency in their life, a certain something that can tie down (not in the bad sense) and give meaning to our existence. I am happy for all who have found it and especially those who have found this consistency to be love.

I love changes, because I do not like to be the same, but to be different every time that I can. Even in my choice of junior college, the key reason was that I did not want to be in the same environment as before as I felt that it would have been quite stifling... and having chosen that path, life threw me a pleasant gift, of friends that grew together, shared together and had the most wonderful conversations. And because of this, I wanted to study overseas, we all did though not all of us managed but I think it was great that some of us had the chance. So change is a big part of my life, in a way I have not noticed before until I typed this today and saw how some things I did was because I wanted to change my own status quo. But as I have said, I also needed a consistency and this has taken the form of my friends and family.

Today, I had an interview, with the Krakow Polish Language School to perhaps be an English instructor over here... I am still making a decision as to whether I take their offer (yep, happily they offered me a place), there are other things that I may want to do and will clash with this but may give me more chances. That is I am waiting to see if I could get a scholarship to study my masters in Rotterdam, Netherlands. I do not know what kind of chances I may have but I would just like to try. Possibilities make me smile again after a long time. I am at the junction right now and about to cross the road....

there is so much to share with you gals for these two days but as Terry needs the laptop to work on his stuf, i cannot get the chance to use the internet very often...love sharing stuff on the blog especially when I am alone there are so many thoughts in my mind that I wanna tell them to my closest friends...

waiting all this in a haste cos Terry is waiting for the computer...i will kep the thoughts as original to as when I first think of them and try my best to recapture the moments... wish you all were here...I am surviving but barely and sometimes think if it just my own thinking too much...thank god for goodfriends to listen to u...=)

To Krakow

After five hours of solid walking, and seven hours of sound sleep, I feel reborn, recharged...ready to embrace the day and all its surprises... given the time lag, I woke up at 0430H today as I have known I would... outside my hostel is a little pretty courtyard with a small fountain and bright cheery flowers...it is always so nice to come too Europe in the summer even if just because of the flowers... just rows and rows of them like little bright people lined up to sing their national anthem.

Before I go to my next destination, I thought I would give a short introduction of the next place that I would be going to: Krakow

Krakow is the third largest city in Poland and in 1038, it was the capital of Poland's Piast Kings. Reputed to be one of the most beautiful and intact city of Poland, it is a definite must-see. Krakow has been very fortunate in a sense during the second world war and was saved just in time by the Soviet army which forced the Germans to evacute the city before destruction could take place. Thus, most of the old buildings are still very much intact and according to Lonely Planet, Krakow is Poland's only large city that has its old architecture almost intact... (to be continued)

Warszawa (Warsaw)

Ever had the feeling when you can literally feel your heart smiling....that is such a special feeling and it is this feeling I got when I made my acquitance with dear charming Warszawa and the friendly, charming Polish people.

it all got on a good start: me, a petite Chinese gal carrying a very very big backpack struggling to find my way to the city center and my hostel, eager to start exploring the city. That made my first encounter with the charismatic bus driver with his shinny deep blue eyes, grinning apologetically when the only English he could managed was " Bus 175"... so apparently the hostel had given wrong instructions or maybe it was just some confusion...either or I was directed to bus 175 where on board a lovely old lady was so happy to be able to help me and probably also to practise her English. =) She was a lovely old woman who was not over chatty and not too sullen and she left me her number just in case anything happens...sweet..

The most lovely thing and must visit is the Old Town area...this place was actually badly bombed during the Second World War, (as you will know, Poland suffered greatly in the second war world) and the whole place had actually been painstakingly remade, recreated by the Polish people. and it is amazingly well done...The walls were even slightly blackish and paint slightly cracked...

Steping in that part of Warsaw, I started to enjoy my solitude, the quietness of the cobbled streets and the unexpected turns into quaint alleys, the sunlit Old town Square, I was so happy that I decided to upped my happiness factor by buying myself ice -cream =) Yes, just small things can make me happy sometimes and it brings such delight when you discover them and is able to savour their simplicity and pure beauty. I found myself sitting on the bench obesvering the mannerisms of pigeons and that made me happy as well... finally i felt at peace being by myself and enjoying the small treats of life that somtimes just pass us by and I was glad I was alone such that I can have the slience to listen to the horse shoes clicked on the cobbled stones; feel the sunlight graze my face and smile at every unsuspecting person that walked pass ( and believe me people stared so blantly at me, this lone Chinese gal...else everyone is White)... I love Warszawa... and the next time I hope I will come with good company...sometimes beauty have to be shared and that will only enhance the experience...

Managing expectations part 2

Something small and unexpected made my day too. It was just a simple gesture, holding the door for me when I was quite a few steps away. It really made me smile to see such chivalry at 8+ am in the morning and you know it's chivalry in its purest when you see his wife and baby in pram walking on ahead. No other intentions, pure chivalry.

Yeah having no expectations can be a really good thing. This is especially so when having too low expectations can result in a self-fulfilling prophecy and too high expectations almost certainly leading to let-downs and disenchantment. In a nutshell,

Expect too much of yourself and you might stress to death, expect too little and risk not attaining ur full potential.

Expect too much of colleagues and you make a difficult/demanding boss,
expect too little and you end up taking everything upon yourself or ending up with inferior work.

Expect too much of friends/loved ones and you might become too high maintenance or too much of an obligation,
expect too little .. hmm.. no real harm done I guess (assuming friendship/love is supposed to be unconditional)

getting famous

You know how blogs are getting so big day by day... ordinary people are getting their five minutes share of fame... some were interviewed and others religiously read by friends, stalkers and people who just find these bloggers life worth their five or ten minutes of surf time.

I cant understand the phenomenal...they are even having a blog convention...imagine that...this is how big this blog 'culture' has become.

Then I thought maybe it is time that our blog become famous as well...given that we have no lack of drama ( marriage and diamond rings); action ( girls getting drunk and sloshed; cajoling waiters to get free drinks) and funny anecdote of how shopping is stopping Singaporeans from baby-making etc.

But then again do we really want strangers peering at what we are writing and having to exercise caution cos we know we have an audience to play to... Then we may not be able to indulge in the occasional *&#@ thing in our little side chat bar.

That said, I will not mind if of course we did...

Royally Sloshed

The bane of being newly engaged.
You get accquainted with things with weird names like Flaming Lamborghini, Mojito, Sex on the Beach....... and the WATERFALL.

Waterfalls are BAAAAAD, but
A dash of Mojito to boot makes it doublly so.
Good friends are a godsend,
and puking is HORRRIIIID...... especially if you happen to go at it all night......oh but the bliss of not having a hangover.....
The fear of having your head fall off your neck and start rolling around the floor- that is one experience i will never forget, and having the toilet bowl, the sink, and every wall and couch along the way as your best friend..... well, THAT won't happen again either.

Tis the season to get Married!

People get married for different reasons. SOme do it cos they're lonely and desperate, some so they can have sex for free and then, there are others who want a clean house.

Of course, there are a select few (like my fren below) who tie the knot for more legitimate reasons, for example, the L word, Love.

Love is a drug. You try it once, it gives you a high that makes you feel so good, you decide to go back for more. You give it a second go , and then soon enough, you realise you're hoooked. You can't live without him/her. ANd when that significant other goes away, the withdrawal symptoms set in so bad until sometimes you'd wished you'll never had it in the first place.


WHy do girls have diamonds as best frens but men have dogs as best frens?
If girls have diamonds as best frens, and guys give girls diamond rings when they propose, does it mean that a girl has to give a guy a dog if she wanted to propose?

People! You have an Engaged Fren!

hahaha....

I Guess that would be me :) heee.... Edward proposed when he brought me to Bintan for a weekend trip... heh, and yes, there is a diamond ring involved (although it is only .16 carat). Not wearing it now tho, coz that goon bought the ring in size 15 (note: Wanqing's left middle finger is a size 11) so it is still making its rounds at the jeweller's for alteration. I wanted to tell you gals in person on Sat at the outing, but couldn't make it in the end so decided to post it here first before it becomes stale news. *grinz*

Poor Ed tho - brought the ring home and the unanimous female response (ie. mother + second sis + third sis ) was "WAH how come diamond so small?????" Having the ever practical boyfriend (now fiance) does have its downside I guess... tsk tsk.

And I am starting work this Wed at OUB Building, exam and class of honours results coming out tomorrow *sheesh* So I am more available to meet up in town after work now! (ok this reasoning may sound warped on a certain level)

Chun - can't wait to see your photos!!! heh.... oh I loved Yellowstone - think it is even better than Yosemites. The time i went, there would be huge jams on the hillside roads at Yellowstone just coz there is some animal spotted along the slope.

Niagra Falls is a darling I agree!!! But I heard it is even more beautiful from the Canadian border. :) Pity I didn't get to see it from there.

Oh, and did you try Krispy Creme?????? Ed swears by the glazed dounuts they sell.... like the M&M commercials you know - melts in your mouth??? no?

hahaha... looking forward to our next outing! haven't clubbed in a long while man... starting to miss it.

Hey girls

I'm writing this in great fear cox this big ant-like insect (that we see on rainy days) is hovering under the lamp above me.

Anyway, I've just started work this week so I've been quite quiet around here. Okie...my sis's bf just saved me from the creepy flylie.

Work's good so far as I am still on training and going around departments to get an overview of the business. Lots of things to see and I'm really excited about going into the assignment proper. I'm quite inspired by the mgt there so far, not much bureacracy and lots of action....exciting...

Tears

I disliked people who cry.
Hence I didn't like my crybaby sister.

Crying is for weak people,
People who can't win a fight otherwise.
Crying is a sign of weakness,
that's why boys don't cry.

As I grow older,
crying seems more complex than ever.

People cry when they are touched,
when they are scolded,
when they fall,
when it hurts.

People also cry during sad movies,
during farewells,
during weddings,
during sentimental occasions.

Maybe crying is just a way of releasing that tension,
the same one that threatens to drive you crazy.
But if so, why does the heart hurt so much,
As if it's breaking?

Romanticism

Or is it better defined by unexpected bouquets of flowers and millions of “I love you”s?
Or simply something that makes your heart go boom boom boom?

Hmm…it cannot be so clear cut. Otherwise, why would men still be baffled by what women want 90% of the time?

Most women want their share of romance and fairytale for their grandchildren. If you are not one by nature, you will become one of these after getting enough dosage of Hollywood movies or Sweet Valley novels. To see what I mean, just observe your mum’s expression whenever your dad comes up with a nice surprise or does something really sweet. Or see how her face drops when your dad dismisses your idea of a romantic escapade for the two of them.

I am a sucker for romance. I like its mysterious quality and its exciting tingle. I like the way it makes me feel special, unique and very loved. Not to mention how it makes one day different from all the days. So if I could buy romance in packets off the shelf, what would I choose?

So darn hot

Xian and I concluded that we like the chart toppers... your Britney Spears, Beyonce and your Mariah Carey and despite our age (a very grand 23 I say), we are not afraid to say it out loud.

When I see people in their late 20s to 30s grooving to hits like " dancing queen", I always thought it's because these are songs in their era and hence, there's a great sense of nostalgia there, amongst all that smoke and alcohol. And another very practical reason why they are not that into Missy Eliot and Usher could be simply because they work in an office. I think people working in an office stop listening to radio, or drastically decrease their listening time when compared to school days and this is especially true in the earlier part of your career cox later on, after you can afford a car, you can cruise home to your favourite radio station.

That brings me to the next possibility - choice of station. Guess people stop picking Perfect 10 or Power 98 and from my avid listening, these are the only 2 stations that brings you the latest.
And why do people stop choosing them? Perhaps the marketing strategies and segmentation of the stations have worked so well that once your age falls out of the range, you feel like you have to fit in better somewhere else.

Some may suggest that it's probably a maturing of taste that have resulted in this but I beg to differ. I feel that there's nothing more glamourous or matured about jazz and old songs than your teeny poppy songs. It's all a matter of preference, and one probably needs a mixture of all genres to fit your moods and feelings.
[note that I am a big jazz fan and I used to be an avid 90.5 listener so I got nothing against old school)

Anyway, heard of the jazz song "It's so darn hot" ? Exactly how I am feeling now. Hope oil prices will stop going up or one day we all have to live without aircon and we can jolly roast in our 35 degrees celcius oven. Hee, this also reminded me of a political joke on LKY and air con in Talkingcock.com.

A sad new...

I was working late last night when I received a call from my dear boyfriend. Something was wrong with him, a very very sad tone ... unusually quiet. Thinking that it was exams stress again, I tried to cheer him up by "faking" an extremely chirpy voice (I'm also very tired and still working at 9!) But, he remained slient for some time and told me that the father of a common guy friend of ours in HJC had just passed away. I was stunned for a moment, we just visited their family this CNY! He was still well, although on wheel-chair after suffering from a shock tiggered by business failure. Actually, I recalled Shengyong telling me that shortly after Feb, this friend have sent his father to a home because his mother had to go out to work to support the family... which was quite sad, when i think back that they used to live along 6th avenue, but eversince the business failure and his father misfortune, they have to shift to a HDB in Bt Batok and those wealthy days are gone.

This makes me wonder ... sometimes things you have chased all your life, like a big house, expensive car, high-flying career can jolly well vanish one day ... you can never predict when ... at the end, all these material wants might seem very meaningless ... this also serves as a reminder for me to cherish every single day I have and count my blessings...

Let me tell you a secret ..

Fishy is on a hot date tonight !! She promised to blog it but I'm still reminding her here just in case she forgets it like how she forgets about her 2 page essay on why knowledge is not power.
(btw girl, knowledge IS power)

I can't help but sense the eerie resemblance, but it seems like once again, I am not into the most popular Desperate Housewives like how I was not in SATC until it has become old fashion. But generally I prefer fashion cox it's about discovering something new and that is intriguing. And the good thing about fashion is that one can be fashionably old-fashioned as well.

Let's talk about our upcoming outings. If you can trust my topo skills, Sentosa and Safari are on 2 opposite ends of the island. May I propose that we go to the Safari one of these nights and finish it with prata supper at Jalan Kayu cox its along the way and Sentosa one of these days for some serious beaching?

We can consider
a) this Sat for Sentosa and this Sun night for Safari (since mon's hols)
b) this Sat night for Safari and next Sat/Sun for Sentosa

wine and dine me

i know thurs is my paper... but economics is drviing me soooo sooo insane... so i decide to come on the blog and see if there have been any entertaining stuff...and decide that i too can leave a blog entry... it wun take me five mintues and would allow me to rant on about something none econs...

basically i was studying and eating kong kuan biscuits and it strucked me for a brief moment (note: brief moment only; i was concentrating ok =p), well it struck me how i am a lover of the old fashioned... i mean there is something so nostalgic about the simple packaging of those KK biscuits that make me feel like you have bought them from an old mama shop in the kampung or something like that. (i mean sometimes KK biscuits does seem so out of place along side those funky japanese meji thingys)

yes... i am a sucker for the old world charm... thats why i love pearls, old advertisments (those hand painted ones), big wavy hair, jazz and my fav character in desperate housewife is Bree except for her strange carrot hair that never messes.

remember our debate about old money and new money... think i will go for old money...haha just for the kick of being wined and dined like a lady...forget the bra-burning; i need a man who will open the doors for me, pull out the chair at the resturant and lead gallently in dances (plus point if he knows his tango from his waltz). okay this is from watching kate and leopard two weeks ago on channel 5.

Giving up your seat

1 min , Boon Lay - everyone gets ready by the door and once the train comes to a hail, door opens, GO! I saw an empty blue seat, oh lucky lucky... slotted myself into it and realized that I was sitting beside this not very handsome but cute looking young man ... anyway, someone else caught my attention... flawless skin, long straight dark hair, petite figure, slim legs, A-line skirt... woah pretty girl. She was struggling with 2 plastic bags (those you get from HDB grocery shop) , in them were thick text books ... obviously those were a quite taxing on her skinny arms and she had tried to balance them against a pillar while she coped with her balance. Huh ha... I tried not o make it so obvious that I was staring at her all this while, so I looked away, decided to fish out "Curious incident of the dog in the mid-night" from my bag, then I realized that the cute guy sitting next to me was totally engrossed in the pretty girl too.

"Should I give up my seat for her?" I think that's was on his mind... as he edged towards the brim of the chair... he tried to catch her eye but failed, guess she was too busy with the plastic bags. Feeling a bit embarrassed, (maybe) he sinked back into the seat and pretended to look somewhere else ...
Me, the witness to the whole incident, flipped to page 45, buried my face in the book and started giggling to myself!! I can't help but think how cowardly the guy was!! If I were a guy, that would be the perfect chance for me to pick up such a pretty girl! Is it just something to do with our Singaporean men or it's just too bad that the pretty girl was not an old lady ... then maybe things will be easier?!?!

I wonder ..

As I walked out of my room, I saw Yoda sleeping soundly in his favourite cushion as usual. My Mum always comments on how fortunate his life is.

He wakes up at seven to accompany my mum through her daily washing ritual and awaits his breakfast. After that, he begins his daily tanning session on the washing machine.

When my dad wakes up, yoda will follow him there and here again and acts his cutest, all in an attempt to get more food. After that, he sleeps on his favourite cushion till my mum begins dinner cooking.

He wakes up again. He rubs his face and body around her legs and purrs loudly to request for his share as well. He literally follows her everywhere till he gets his dinner. After that, he watches TV with us or rests on the cable box (when the night is cold). It would not be long before he takes his post-dinner nap. He only wakes up again in the wee hours to try play with my dad. After that, he retires on my parents' bed, at my dad's feet.

I figure he basically sleeps about half his life away. While we humans often ponder (I hope) the meaning of our existence, I really wonder if animals do as well? If Yoda could speak, would he come to the same conclusion as my mum, that he's a really lucky feline or reflect on his meaning of his life and conclude that he is not getting the most of it?

Given a choice, would you rather lead his kind of life? Carefree and loved, without the need to handle any responsibilities at all. Or would you rather try find some meaning in the ratty world out there?

a lovely lovely rainiy day

it seems like ages seems we have a good shower and finally heaven blesses us with a two-hours good long wash... wash, wash, wash away that repressing heat.

this calls for such a celebration and i don on my lovely pink sweater and venture through campus, feeling like I was overseas once again , where the weather is nice and cool and less pimples inducing (yes I am having the most unflattering breakout now =( ) but anyway so there i was walking around in pink and beige, nice feminine assemble, relishing my last few days as an undergraduate....the truth being i was also carrying a heavy, notes-ladden pink file to do some zapping... but that does not yet stop me from enjoying those certain after rain sensations... how would you describe it? the feeling after it has rained, the feeling of the light breeze carassing your face.


Undergraduate, i think there is a certain nice twing when u say that word, embodying fun, youth and parties, the last few years before you embark into the unknown working world.

Uncertainties...
what is so scary about that word? There are some who relish and thrive in it and some who will do not want to even touch it with a yard long stick. Of course these are only two extremes, two polar opposites and most of us reside in between.
Also different ocassions and people will bring out different degrees; there are those who bring u, as a willingly particpant, along their adventure rides and there are those who provide those strong arms for the stability that you crave. But all human need stability albeit to different extent; need constant-ness, routines. Or?

So much for rain inspired rantings... thought it has delved pretty off track...

Moving Office!

Heya! I'm going to have a new seat soon .. I saw it today, it's just beside the window and it's facing the shaw building and I can see bugis junction ... mmm not bad right? So, our whole team's going to move to the other side of the same floor... and you can that I'm lucky that i'm having a window seat and lots of privacy. And I'm sitting just outside my boss's office, parallel to his, very near him. So, is it good or not?

Well, good in the sense that I get privacy and am nearer to action (daily trading) but... I'm seating just beside miss peahen!!! and of course, away from others.. not much social interaction and I'm a social animal... but when I told other jkps abt that, they said I should count myself lucky coz only senior gets the window seat ;P okie ... fine... dun be too picky, at least I can take off my coat in the afternoon and get a good tan hee hee ... glaring afternoon sun!!

Baby making nation

LIke they say, there's nothing much to do in Singapore during the weekends.

Every monday, the same conversation goes.

"How was your weekend?"

"eh nothing much lah, jus watch movie loh, and walk ard town loh"

Occassionally there will be a

"oh I played tennis and now have muscle ache leh, getting old liao"

For those who crave the sun and sand,

" I suntanned and played beach volleyball. See I so tanned."

And for those who harbour the tiniest of dreams to emulate Tiger woods,

"heh i played golf leh and swung it like a baseball bat"

Anyway, these are perhaps all you can do in singapore, watch movies, shopping( I swear this IS a national past time, judging by how suffocatingly packed the shopping centres are in the weekends.) , and sports.

This got me thinking. Since there IS nothing to do, why is there a baby problem?

Is watching a show better than sex?

Can people be co-erced into making love cos of mere boredem?

Of course, we do know that singaporeans are a pragmatic lot who are aware of that babies are like black holes when it comes to money.

What if we made babies to sell?
Would that be a credible livlihood?
( Can I be jailed for the above statement? OH pls. not the ratten pls)
And so I shall make a politically correct statement:

Of course we Can't make babies to sell. Its callous, selfish and despicable. Damn those who do it.

strange feeling

well
second day of freedom from that horrible manifestion of a thesis,( but still with term papers and examinations...
etc etc) and second entry in the blog.

i was staring at my big pile of notes and research and wondering what to do with them. its a very strange feeling after u have worked ur heart out and suddenly you just dun have to think abt it anymore.

I almost died this two weeks, in retrospect, why did those 40 pages matter so much?
guess even when there are more important things in life, there are stuff we just have to do as part of our responsibility. and the end results matter but not as much as how u get there. it was a learning experience for me; glad that its over but also that i went thru it.

Game!!!

There was a girl who lived in a little island called Neversayneverland. One day she woke up and found that her nose hair had grown till it reached her feet. Greatly distraught, she sobbed and tried to cut it off with a scissors. Alas! The hair was too strong and the scissors broke into pieces. Next she tried yanking it out by stepping on it. She was about to jump on her hair when....she decided that she might trip on herself in the process and fall flat on her nose, her wonderfully chiseled nose! Hence, she decided to go to the root of the problem. She aimed for the nose hair with a metallic tweezers and did her best. And....it worked!!!! made an oath; an oath of determination. As she licked her fingers and crossed her heart, she heard a little voice inside her sing "No more nose hair..lalala..no more nose hair.." She smiled to herself. People often called her the crazy one, and her mum told her she lost her a screw as a kid. But she knew better than anyone else that the voice belonged to her guardian angel. She was filled with optimism and she began to sob heavily.Mucus started running down her nose, and her nose hair congulated into a lump of soggy mess. She panicked. She tried to blow her nose profusely but the harder she tried, the more air she blew out of her nostrils, and the mucus hardened even faster.She couldn’t breathe. Was she going to die as the girl with long nose hair who cried herself to death???!!!! Crikey!!! Suddenly...

there was a gust of wind, which lifted her nose hair, causing the greenish mucus laden strands to dance round her face. A shadow loomed and a hooded figure appeared. She felt a tingle up her spine as the creature drew nearer and nearer."Come to me, my child,” it whispered.Filled with stupid bravado, she did. She crept closer to the unearthly being."Show yourself. And then, it unveiled itself.The little girl's eyes grew as big as two durian seeds. She couldn't believe it. Johnny Depp was standing right in front of her. "I....

Wonder how much he charge for a hair do though … hey, what is he doing here?

“Eeewww!!! What is this? Eeeee…” David squeaked. Oh oh oh… she definitely needs a cut for that hair, nose hair I mean … yucks yucks yucks!! Without hesitation, David took out his famous golden scissors and got down to work. In a few swift cuts, the nose hair magically disappeared and to end it all, he took out this tiny bottle of purplish essence and poured a whole lot into her nostrils. “Ah yo, this me-he-cine (medicine) is very good one”, David declared to Johnny proudly, “bought it from Potong Pasir leh…”“Potong Pasir? I know potong is ice-cream….”Johnny was deep in thoughts when he heard a choke from her, he turned around and saw David waving the empty bottle proudly in the air and beside him, she was getting up from the ground. She looked totally different…
