word of the day

how many words are there in the English language? Many hundreds and thousands and increasing every year as the English Oxford Directory updates its entries on an annual basis. Thinking that I would probably never learn all of it in a life time, but to remember the few new ones that I come across on a daily basis ; using them would help remembrance, hence my word of the day coloumn :-)

Today's new word for me, got it while reading an article that states that, "Holland is home to one of the more polyglot European populations" - because it is so common to find people who can speak a few languages ( how true this is? I know many Dutch people can all speak English pretty good.)

polyglot
adjective
1 a : speaking or writing several languages b : composed of numerous linguistic groups
2 : containing matter in several languages
3 : composed of elements from different languages
4 : being widely diverse (as in ethnic or cultural origins)

this word can be used as a noun as well-

1 : one who is polyglot
